The Altar Windows (Panel-B)
The windows above the altar tell us the five reasons why we worship. Facing the windows and altar, let us begin from the left with Window Two. We worship God the Creator, symbolized by the Hand. Note the tablets of the Ten Commandments. The center window stands for Jesus Christ. Notice the crosses. The next window shows the descending dove of the Holy Spirit upon the community of faith. Window One, on the extreme left, depicts why we worship because of the healing sciences, arts, and their techniques. Note the caduceus. Window Five, on the far right, depicts why we worship because of technology, industry, invention, and science.
God’s Inter-relationship with Man
Why we worship – What or Who we worship
The dominant figure of this entire window grouping is the form of the Eye, symbolizing The God who created us, guides us, and watches over us. The red rays around the Eye symbolize the creative burst that brought our universe into being (the Big Bang Theory). The rays also form a cross. The cross is a symbol that reminds us that we worship God in more than one form, i.e., brought into being through the crucifixion. Above the Eye are portrayed the three forms in which we recognize and worship God. In Window Two, you see God portrayed by the Hand. The center window shows the Son by the cross. Window Three sees the dove of the Holy Spirit. Finally, the center window is capped by the triangle symbol of the Trinity. Below the Eye is the Arc of the Earth, a hemisphere-like line. Below it are depictions of the elements of life: building, pavement, tools for planting and eating, ropes, plow shares, spoons, cobblestones, and bricks. Across the center portion of all the windows, flanking the Eye of God, are figures that remind us that in worship, we pray prayers of Thanksgiving for elements of life and are especially thankful for four dominant gifts.
