The Winds of Pentecost Blow Again, Whoosh, Whoosh, Whoosh

Thoughts from the St. Paul Staff

BettyLeppardSchools are back in session, and many children are traveling to and from school each week day. Let's all work to help keep our children safe. We know that reliable crossing guards and bus drivers are employed
for this most important task, but it takes a community working together to protect our children.

Allow extra driving time to reach your destination if you are traveling during times the children are walking from home to school. Be ready to stop instantly if a child darts into the street or even a cross walk. Bear in mind how playful they are, and please remember they are still learning the rules of safety. As adults, we should also observe whether younger children are being harassed by older students or even if suspicious looking adults are loitering around. Pull over if you can safely do so; it may deter a bully. If you are near a school, call the office on your phone and report it. If the problem appears more serious or is farther away from the school, call the police. Wouldn't we rather be safe than sorry?

When driving in congested areas near schools or following a school bus, refrain from talking on your own cell phone or (horrors) texting. Just a moment of inattentiveness could have serious consequences. Always respect the crossing guards; they take their jobs seriously and put the students' safety first.

If you are at home when children are walking to and from school or waiting for a bus, you are also an important line of safety for these students. Inside or out of your house, you can be watchful and notice if any child may be in some type of danger whether it be cars, strangers or a dog running loose. Take action when it is appropriate; remember it could be your child or grandchild needing help.

As people of God, we need to be protective and ever watchful of our children while they are traveling to school each day. Let us help God keep them safe and well on their journeys to learn more about the world.
